Premier tourist destination Afriski Resort has been closed.

In a weekend statement, the facility announced that it was shutting down with immediate effect from 14 April 2023, until further notice.

“We regret to inform you that due to unseen circumstances, Afriski Resort has been closed,” said Reuphillan Pelser on behalf of the Jala Group and Afriski Resort.

“We apologise for the inconvenience and to all our regular guests.

“We would like to thank you for your support and understanding during this difficult time,” the statement noted. It however, did not specify what the “unforeseen circumstances” were.

Since its establishment in 2000, Afriski had become a preferred snow destination in Southern Africa.

The resort boasts multiple slopes, world class snow making equipment and facilities, as well as a wide range of summer activities. It is located in the Drakensberg-Maluti Mountains of the Butha-Buthe district.

The tourist destination has a full range of activities which include mountain biking, trail running, hiking, fly fishing, enduro biking and high-altitude training.

In March 2019, Afriski’s shareholding was consolidated under Jala Investment Holdings, a Lesotho public company which sought to encourage investment from Basotho residents.
