The ministry of health yesterday welcomed a team of Chinese doctors who will be deployed in Lesotho for a period of one year, as part of efforts to bolster health services in the country.

The team is made up of specialists in general surgery, physiology, radiology and orthopedics.

The director-general of health services, Dr ‘Nyane Letsie, hailed the presence of the Chinese medical experts as a move that will improve health services in Lesotho.

Letsie said medical experts from the Hubei province in China have in the past provided specialized care to Basotho and have always done a sterling job of capacitating young Basotho doctors with the required skills.

“Before the demolition of Queen Elizabeth II Hospital, Chinese doctors had been working in the country for up to five years, and I hope they will still be here even after the completion of the construction of the new hospital.”

At the same occasion, the health minister Semamo Sekatle thanked the Republic of China for bringing qualified specialists and technicians who have brought high quality medical equipment to help Basotho.

“It is very unfortunate that they will be in the country for a short time. I believe they will do their work diligently since there is an inadequacy of their skills in the country.”

Meanwhile, the leader of the Chinese medical team Captain Ai Hong Yan noted that Chinese doctors have always been in Lesotho since 1997 to strengthen the profound friendship between the two countries.

She added that they will work tirelessly to overcome the challenges in the health system, using high quality equipment.

“We will actively carry out clinical diagnosis and medical treatment to patients and contribute immensely in health services and hygiene.”
