Lesotho’s National Covid-19 Secretariat (Nacosec) says it is yet to report a case of the new Omicron variant of Covid-19 which is wreaking havoc in neighbouring South Africa.
The Omicron variant is a variant of SARS-CoV-2, the virus that causes Covid-19. As of December 2021, it is the newest variant. It was first reported to the World Health Organization from South Africa in 24 November 2021.
According to Nacosec’s public relations officer ‘Mateboho Mosebekoa, the secretariat has sent samples to South Africa’s National Institute of Communicable Diseases to test and confirm occurrence of the virus.
The latest Covid-19 updates show that, out of 98 people tested on Sunday 11 came out positive, while no deaths were reported.
Meanwhile, Lesotho and South Africa have agreed to commence rapid antigen testing at entry points between the two countries on Tuesday.
The arrangement will see Lesotho testing people coming in from South Africa while those entering South Africa will be tested on the other side of the border.
