The ministry of health with support from UNICEF and other partners in celebration of ‘global hand washing day’ continues to work towards universal access to hand hygiene in Lesotho.
In a statement by the UNICEF, partners are showing supporting through installation of hand hygiene stations, increasing access to water supply, provision of hygiene supplies, hygiene promotion messaging and hygiene behaviour change trainings.
The statement indicates that the ministry is also developing a National Strategy for Hand Hygiene.
“Once completed, the strategy will provide key actions for government, non-government, business partners, and communities to move Lesotho towards a country in which there is a culture of hygiene that enables and promotes the practice of handwashing with soap for all people at all critical moments.
“The benefits of this simple action transcend disease prevention, and contribute to better education outcomes, a more productive workforce, a strengthened economy, and ultimately the well-being of all. But to achieve this, every person of all abilities, and all socio-economic means need to consider handwashing at critical times a cultural norm; it should be something that we all do, because it is the right thing to do,” the statement said.
