The ministry of transport today announced that the issuing of new number plates is underway at all traffic offices in the country.

In a statement released today, the ministry stated that everyone is expected to return the number plates that bear the coat of arms.

It explained that the new number plates will be issued for free to those who heed the call to return their pair of number plates (back and front).

“People will be given two months to return the number plates, from September to October. Those who will return them after the given period, will have to pay to get new ones. The issuance of new number plates will be done even on weekends and holidays, from 9am to 2pm, to avoid overcrowding.

“From November 1, it will be illegal for a car to be seen spotting a number plate that has the coat of arms. Those that were given temporary number plates will also receive new ones. We encourage all Basotho to return the old number plates that bear the Basotho hat (mokorotlo) to return them. However, the service is not free to them,” the statement reads.
