Two South African men – Entsos Divet and William Radolf – who work at local hotel Avani Lesotho appeared before Maseru magistrate court yesterday on charges of contravening section 165 (1-3) of the Labour Code Order of 1992.
The law, in the section, states that it is illegal to hire a foreign national without a work permit, and it is also illegal for a foreign national to accept a job in Lesotho without a work permit.
According to Lesotho Mounted Police Services assistant public relations officer Sub-Inspector ‘Mareabetsoe Mofoka, police got a tip off about a foreign national who works at the hotel without a work permit.
Mofoka said police and ministry of labour and employment officials went to the hotel and arrested the two men.
“One of them is said to be a chef while the other is a manager of the hotel. They were each given bail of M1 000 bail and paid M10 000 surety, which they were able to pay.
“They will appear in court again on May 12,” she said.
