The Independent Electoral Commission (IEC) has been allocated M136million to prepare for the 2022 general elections.
This was recealed by finance minister Thabo Sophonea when he tabled the 2021/2022 budgetary allocations in parliament this week.
According to Sophonea, the budget includes harmonisation of the electoral laws with the aim of holding the local government elections and National Assembly elections concurrently.
“Subsequently, this will be followed by re-registration of voters with the aim of improving the quality of the voter register and develop civic voter education curriculum so as to improve participation of stakeholders in the electoral process,” he said.
In October last year, IEC public relations officer, Tuoe Hantši said there were a lot of issues that need to be dealt with before elections, and on top of that there was already an outcry over out-dated voters roll which the commission will have to work on before the 2022 elections.
