A police officer and a civilian were apprehended by members of the Lesotho Defence Force in connection an armed robbery that happened at St Michaels in Maseru on Tuesday.

According to police spokesperson, Senior Superintend Mpiti Mopeli, three men – one of whom was even wearing a police reflector – staged a bogus roadblock near St Michaels, where they pulled over a Pakistani motorist and robbed him of M9,300.

“When the Pakistani man stopped his car at the fake roadblock, the suspects tried to rob him, but he fought them off and managed to prise off a firearm which turned out to be a toy gun. Members of the community gave chase and were quickly joined by the LDF members who were in the vicinity.

“Two of the robbers were apprehended, and one turned out to be a police officer who works at Lithoteng Police Station. Apparently, he was supposed to have been at work at the time of the incident.

“The other one is a civilian. They are both in police custody and might be taken to the doctor because they were beaten up by the soldiers and angry community members,” Mopeli said.

The third suspect is on the loose after he managed to escae in a silver grey Honda Fit.
