Maluti Mountain Brewery (MMB) has designed a program that will ensure relief for local farmers by availing spent grain (moroko) free of charge for the next three months
This is in line with MMB’s covid 19 alleviation initiatives to help Basotho recover from the effects of Covid 19.
Public announcement made by MMB states that the pilot project for this initiative will be rolled out from October 1 to December 31 2020, after which there will be opportunity for possible review
The announcement further stated that there is an increased interest in spent grain (moroko) and its use as a livestock supplementary feed, particularly in dairy, pig and small stock production for increased productivity and production.
An agreement between MMB, Department of Livestock, and LENAFU has been reached to ensure the process happens in a seamless and transparent manner.
For the collection of the spent grain form MMB, farmers should organize themselves into manageable farmer groups which can collect the spent grain collectively from the MMB plant.
“No individual farmers shall collect the by-product for own individual purpose, but only the farmer groups will be allowed.
“The lists should be authentic and verifiable; Name of the association (farmer group), location, names of persons, contact details.
All these lists should be submitted first to LENAFU for planning & scheduling and other management purposes.
“Access to the by-product should be treated as an equal opportunity to all the interested users, and no priority should be given to a certain group of people or a livestock commodity.
“A WhatsApp group to be established for LENAFU and the farmers to help manage the program as the distribution and collection plans will be shared there,” the public announcement stated.
