The halls of Lehakoe Recreational Centre pulsated with style and panache last Saturday, as fashionistas and trend-setters from near and far gathered for the School of Crafts and Development Lesotho (SCDL)’s latest fashion show.
The event was a smash hit, featuring a dazzling array of designs that left the audience breathless and clamouring for more.
Held under the theme: ‘The Prime Holy Matrimony, Wedding of the Century’, the event was multicultural and celebrated infusion of different cultures, creativity fashion and union of tradition with modernity.
Marketing officer of the School of Crafts and Development Lesotho, Mpho Tema painted a vibrant picture of the resounding success of this year’s fashion show which surpassed expectations in every metric.
The event drew a large and enthusiastic audience and also garnered widespread media attention, with photographers and journalists flocking to the value to capture the dazzling designs on display.
The atmosphere was electric, buzzling with energy and excitement as the SCDL once again demonstrated its commitment to excellence in craftmanship and innovation.
The show was inspired to mark a significant bridal-and-groom cultural collaboration with other African weddings such as a combination of designs of Sesotho Vs India, Sesotho Vs British, Sesotho Vs Zulu and Sesotho Vs Sesotho.
It highlighted the latest trends and innovation in bridal couture, offering a unique blend of tradition, love and cotemporary style designed by SCDL students.
The main objective of this annual fashion show is to develop and expand students’ opportunities in the fashion industry, as well as show creativity and innovation using Basotho-owned fabrics.
The show exposes them to real world industry experiences, helping them to develop dynamic and transferable skillsets. It also acts as a stepping stone towards prospective career paths, setting them apart as highly attractive and creative candidates in the fashion industry.
The event further brings awareness to Basotho about fashion creativity and introduces Sesotho designs to other countries.
In an interview with theReporter, Tema said this year’s design infused more creative and innovation.
Apart from that, this year’s designs displayed the meaning of culture, how one must be proud of who they are, and embrace those cultures in marriage through designs.
“I believe these designs really signified beauty and recent innovations that come along with different cultures including marrying Sesotho bride,” Tema said.
However, Tema noted that in the upcoming events, the school of crafts will need to prioritise on exceeding the budget in order to make the celebratory area more stunning in terms of deco and accommodation.
“To everyone who supported and contributed in making this event a success, we would like to extend our heartfelt thanks. Your encouragement, dedication, and presence mean the world to us, and we are truly grateful for your unwavering support. It is your generosity and kindness that have made this event possible, and we are so thankful to have you with us every step of the way. Thank you for believing in us and standing by our side. We appreciate you more than words can express,” she concluded.
Queen ‘Masenate Mohato Seeiso, in attendance at the event made clear her appreciation for the institution’s commitment to nurturing and showcasing the creative talents of young Basotho.
The Queen highlighted the impressive progress and evolution that the School of Crafts has made since her last visit, praising the institution for its ability to inspire and empower a new generation of Basotho artisans.
“I am really happy for you students for the commendable work you are doing in fashion industry. I encourage you to work harder because we are looking up to you. Remember, if you believe in it, you will definitely do it.
“I want to tell you a secret that most of my clothes, are designed by Basotho designers. I don’t buy my clothes outside the country and that makes them (designers) proud that they are the ones who dressed me,” the Queen said.
She stated that most part of the country is talking about the nation brand launched recently under the theme: ‘Experience Elevation’ “and that is exactly what Basotho should do, to elevate Lesotho through various talents, including is what SCDL is already doing”.
