The ministry of finance and development planning will disseminate the financial year 2022/23 survey results to the media on Wednesday next week.

The Open Budget Survey (OBS) was successfully conducted by the ministry in partnership with the International Budget Partnership (IBP).

National Director of the Media Institute of Southern Africa Lesotho, Lekhetho Ntsukunyane, says the survey evaluates transparency, participation, and accountability within public finance systems.

“One of IBP’s primary functions is to produce and release the biennial OBS, which serves as the sole independent, comparative and regular assessment of budget transparency and accountability worldwide.

“The OBS relies on documented evidence to provide a thorough evaluation of whether central governments create and share eight essential budget documents with the public, as mandated by internationally recognised best practices,” Ntsukunyane said.

IBP is an independent, non-profit organisation that works alongside civil society groups and various stakeholders globally, including governmental bodies, to influence budget policies and practices that foster equity and justice sustainably.

The OBS on the other hand examines the level of oversight exercised by legislative bodies and supreme audit institutions, as well as the availability of opportunities for meaningful public participation throughout the national budget process.
