April 19 will surely be a day to remember as Lesotho will be embracing the cannabis culture with the highly anticipated second edition of the annual Lesotho 420 Cannabis Expo at Maseru Club.
The event will also feature performances by top South African artists alongside local talent.
First held in 2024 and organised by the Basotho Medical Herbs (Pty) Ltd, the expo promises a vibrant event of the cannabis culture, headlined by renowned South African artist Oskido and various local performers.
The CEO of Basotho Medical Herbs, Matla-a-morena Lethunya, explained the significance of “420” in an interview with theReporter.
“420, pronounced ‘Four-twenty,’ is deeply rooted in cannabis culture. It refers to April 20, a day when enthusiasts worldwide come together to celebrate their passion for marijuana,” he said.
Originating in the 1970s, the term has since evolved into a global movement advocating for the legalisation and de-stigmatisation of cannabis. The Lesotho 420 Cannabis Expo emerges as a testament to the country’s pioneering role in cannabis legislation within Africa.
“This event is more than a celebration; it is a platform for discussion, education, and showcasing the potential of the cannabis industry,” Lethunya noted.
Participants will gain valuable insights into the economic and medicinal benefits of cannabis while promoting awareness and responsible consumption.
Lethunya emphasised the festival’s multifaceted objectives. “We aim to educate our community, advocate for responsible cannabis use, and promote local businesses.”
The event will host exhibitors ranging from local growers to international companies, offering workshops on cultivation, product tastings, and discussions on medicinal benefits.
Festival-goers can expect an exciting mix of entertainment, food stalls, and live music, creating a lively and engaging atmosphere.
However, organising such an event comes with challenges, particularly given Lesotho’s evolving legal framework surrounding cannabis.
“Navigating the regulatory landscape has been complex,” Lethunya pointed out. “We are committed to ensuring compliance with all legal requirements while addressing public misconceptions about cannabis use.”
Safety remains a top priority for the festival, with designated consumption areas, on-site security, and strict age verification processes in place to ensure a secure environment.
Beyond entertainment, the event will focus on education, featuring a carefully curated schedule of performances and informative sessions.
Looking ahead, Lethunya envisions a bright future for Lesotho’s cannabis industry.
“This festival will play a crucial role in shaping public perceptions, fostering a responsible cannabis culture, and driving economic growth,” he said.
