The Lesotho Communications Authority (LCA) has launched Child Online Protection safety guidelines aimed at creating a safer digital space for children. The initiative was unveiled at a press conference in Maseru today.
Child Online Protection is a multi-stakeholder effort requiring collaboration between technology companies, educators, parents, and communities. LCA’s goal is to foster a secure online environment where children can navigate the digital world safely while minimising risks such as cyberbullying, phishing, and exposure to harmful content.
Advocate Thato Ponya, LCA’s Chief Legal Compliance Officer, emphasized the need for age-appropriate content restrictions and parental controls to safeguard children online.
He noted that the guidelines focus on privacy, data protection, and cybersecurity, ensuring children’s digital experiences remain safe and positive.
Adv Ponya also highlighted the importance of responsible social media use, digital footprint awareness, and screen time management.
He urged parents to engage in open discussions with their children and utilise supervision tools to enhance online safety.
“We will collaborate with schools and advocacy groups to implement these measures, promoting safe browsing and strong privacy settings,” he said.
The public is encouraged to participate in digital literacy programmes as part of LCA’s broader effort to create a safer and more responsible online environment for children.
