In a bid to modernise its civil aviation infrastructure, Lesotho has announced a comprehensive revitalisation programme, with a budget exceeding M2 billion over the next five years.

Minister of Public Works and Transport, Matjato Moteane, announced the establishment of an autonomous Lesotho Aviation Authority and various operational units, which will pave the way for significant improvements in air travel and logistics.

Key initiatives include upgrading navigation systems, extending the runway at Moshoeshoe 1 International Airport, and enhancing terminal facilities to meet international standards.

This ambitious project aims to accommodate medium-range aircraft, boosting tourism and economic opportunities.

A Special Economic Zone will also be developed at the airport, fostering growth in the aviation sector through manufacturing diversification.

“The revitalisation of our aviation sector is vital for connecting Lesotho to the global market, attracting tourists, and stimulating economic growth,” Moteane said in a statement.

He noted that with these upgrades, Lesotho is poised to elevate its aviation standards, ensuring safer and more efficient air travel for both residents and visitors alike.
