Prime minister Samuel Matekane arrived in Apia, Samoa yesterday for the 2024 Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting (CHOGM) that will commerce tomorrow until Saturday.

According to a statement from the PM’s office, this will be the 27th CHOGM.

Samoa’s vision for the event is to build one resilient common future by transforming the Commonwealth.

This meeting promises to deliver concrete solutions to global challenges through the principals of fostering inclusivity, transparency, and dialogue.

GHOGM 2024 also aims to strengthen democratic institutions upholding human rights, democracy, and the rule of law, as well as combating climate change.

The meeting will be the first full Commonwealth summit held since the death of Queen Elizabeth II in 2022 and the first presided over by king Charles III as head of the Commonwealth. It will also be the first meeting to be held in a Pacific Island developing state.

The heads of government will select the 7th Commonwealth secretary general to replace incumbent Patricia Scotland.
