How to avoid social media scams

As the need to socialise and connect online increases, we find ourselves spending endless hours scrolling between different social media apps. By so doing, so does the likelihood to be scammed. Currently, there is a spike in the number of online scams, especially via WhatsApp where peoples’ accounts are hacked, and their contacts are asked to send scammers money. This article shares tips to help you avoid being scammed online.

# Be vigilant and think before you click

Being inundated with some much information online, I cannot emphasise the importance of pausing and thinking before clicking. Sifting through countless messages and trying to make sense of things can be overwhelming. Scammers take advantage of you being distracted and lure you to click on fake links.

# If it is too good to be true, it probably is

The pressure that comes with social media, where people portray certain lifestyles online with flashy cars, travelling the world and attending different events can be tempting. As such, scammers capitalise on your ambition and hunger to thrive. You will suddenly receive direct messages offering you unrealistic opportunities to travel or earn money. Remember, if it is too good to be true, it likely is.

# Always double check to verify

One of the easiest ways scammers succeed is taking advantage of your vulnerability, where trusting someone and making assumptions can land you in hot water! Because accounts can be hacked, never assume that every messages you receive is legitimate. Make it a habit to always double check and verify by calling whoever sent the message before sending the required funds.

As you continue to enjoy interacting with family and friends online, always be vigilant and  transact securely. Ha bo chelete ho hole, so take care of your money!
