Two National University of Lesotho (NUL) students, Tṧepang Nkoe and Khotso Phali, have come up with an innovation that is poised to revolutionise farming in Lesotho.

The pair have developed an artificial intelligence-based system that keeps tabs on the health and well-being of crops.

Aptly named Lesotho AI Agricultural Virtual Assistant (LAAVA), the gadget is designed to empower Basotho farmers. It leverages artificial intelligence (AI) to diagnose crop diseases, predict future problems, and optimise farming practices.

The system works through a chat interface whereby farmers can upload pictures of their crops, and LAAVA will analyse the image to identify potential diseases. LAAVA can also answer questions in both English and Sesotho to ensure wider usability.

Beyond disease detection, LAAVA integrates microprocessors into farms. These sensors collect data on soil fertility, moisture levels, and other factors. This real-time information allows farmers to make informed decisions about their crops, maximising yield and minimising environmental impact.

For example, the gadget can monitor strawberry crops, which require specific moisture and temperature conditions.  The system can guide farmers in adjusting these factors for optimal growth.

In a recent interview with theReporter, Nkoe said their idea stemmed from a desire to improve the lives of Basotho farmers.

“LAAVA is designed for Basotho farmers of all experience levels. The system offers features for both new and experienced farmers, including a community forum for knowledge sharing.

“We recognised the challenges they face, such as crop disease and limited access to resources.  LAAVA aims to address these issues by providing them with a user-friendly and informative tool.

“We are passionate about agriculture and technology, and LAAVA combines these two fields. Our goal is to empower Basotho farmers with knowledge and resources, ultimately leading to increased, productivity and food security,” Nkoe highlighted.

Apart from that they also hope to create employment opportunities with the expansion of this project.

The two have always been exploring new ideas, but LAAVA is their most significant innovation to date.

Nkoe added that LAAVA is still under development, but they have received positive feedback during initial testing. Farmers appreciate the system’s user-friendly interface and its potential to improve their yields.

Nkoe and Phali are both are final year students studying Bachelor of Engineering Computer Systems and Networks at the NUL.

Asked how long it took them to develop the system, Nkoe said developing LAAVA is an ongoing process. However, significant progress has been made during their final year at NUL.

“We were fascinated by the potential of AI to revolutionise various industries, including agriculture. AI can analyse vast amounts of data and identify patterns that humans might miss, leading to significant advancements,” he noted.

The materials and components they use are sourced from various suppliers, both locally and internationally.

Speaking of challenges they have encountered Nkoe said, “Securing funding and acquiring a large dataset have been our primary challenges. We are actively seeking partnerships and grants to overcome these hurdles.

“However, despite of all the challenges this project has been a valuable learning experience to us. We have gained practical skills in software development, project management, and business development.

“Most importantly, we have learned the importance of perseverance and adaptability in the face of challenges,” he added.

According to their observations, Nkoe said they noted that Basotho farmers are increasingly open to adopting new technologies. Nonetheless, there is still a need for education and awareness campaigns to highlight the benefits of Artificial Intelligence in agriculture.

LAAVA itself can play a role in promoting technology adoption by demonstrating its practical applications, he indicated.

He further encouraged Basotho farmers to consider using LAAVA to improve their crops and yields.

“Basotho farmers, we are excited to introduce LAAVA, your one-stop shop for a smarter and more productive farm!  LAAVA is here to empower you with the latest technology to improve your crops and yields.

“Here’s what LAAVA offers you: diagnose crop diseases: quickly and easily using image recognition; get recommendations: on how to treat identified diseases and prevent future outbreaks; monitor your soil health: in real-time with our sensor network, allowing you to optimise watering and fertilisation; and access real-time market prices: for your crops to make informed selling decisions.

“Lastly, it allows you to connect with other farmers through our community forum to share knowledge and experiences; both experienced and new farmers are welcome,” he concluded.
