MMC elevates communities through soccer

By Neo Kolane

Maluti Mountain Cement (MMC) has injected a whopping M220 000 for the hosting of the Berea Soccer Charity Tournament.

The competition will be held at Lioli stadium in Berea on October 4, 2023 to celebrate Lesotho’s 57th Independence Day.

A total of M100, 000 will go towards the prize money while the rest will cover logistical costs.

Vodacom Premier League sides, Lioli FC and Bantu FC will battle it out for the M50 000 top prize and a trophy. Runners-up will get M20 000.

In the other match, Berea District Football Association outfits Maroala FC and Amigos FC will lock horns for M20 000 and a trophy. Runners-up will walk away with M10 000.

Speaking during the official launch of the tournament on Tuesday this week, MMC director Lehlohonolo Lephema said the sponsorship was part of the company’s social responsibility initiative to give back to the community.

“We’re working to bring change within Lesotho’s sports fraternity. We’ve realised that sport brings unity,” he noted.

He also indicated that they will host more tournaments in Berea district next year to benefit the community that saw and helped them grow as Lephema Executive Transport, MMC’s parent company.

Lephema said they were giving back to the people of Berea after realising they had potential to elevate the district through sports.

The president of Maroala Football Club, Moeketsi Thebe, said the team was delighted to take part in the soccer tournament.

He expressed hope that the club will continue to improve its standard and become a national household name in future.
