Poleliso Nkhabu, who is also known as CeejayDaMafia by her fans, has gained a lot of popularity for her content on the TikTok streets in the past few months.
Ceejay creates videos acting as ‘Mathabang and Thabang respectfully. Her videos are mostly about a
mother and her son and how they go about their daily lives – stuff that most people can relate to but with a tinge of comedy.
Since making these video, she has been able to grow her TikTok account which now stands at 250 000
followers. Her big followership has also attracted businesses which want her to promote their products and services.
Ceejay revealed that she has worked with companies such as Tlotsa and the School of Arts, adding that she is grateful for the support from Basotho.
The artist was born and raised in Lesotho until she moved to South Africa to complete her high school before coming back to further her studies at the Limkokwing University of Creative Technology where she graduated in 2020 with an associate degree in Broadcasting (television and radio).
Ceejay says while residing in South Africa, she had the privilege of living of with her grandmother who she says is initially the inspiration behind her ‘Mathabang content.
“Almost everything that ‘Mathabang does or says is exactly what my grandmother used to say and
how she would act in different situations.
“However, ‘Mathabang is not really my grandmother’s real name. I thought I could come up with another name just to protect her. So, that is how the name ‘Mathabang was selected,” she said.
She moved to Cape Town two years ago to explore other opportunities outside her country, but insists that her content always relates to Lesotho and Basotho.
“I believe I am at my best when I relay my message on TikTok in my home language, hence all my videos are in Sesotho,” Ceejay said.
She noted that her content is fit for both kids and adults as she does not use vulgar language, and it creates bonds between families because they can relate to her content and have a good laugh.
“I can boldly say I am one of the best content creators in Africa. My content is
different from the rest since I talk about issues that black people go through with their families.”
Ceejay is also a rapper who has been making music since 2011 as a solo artist. However, she has now formed a duo with her partner, Buzzer EL, and they have been creating music since 2020. They go by the name Melodic Twins and their music is available on Spotify.
