The People’s Republic of China has donated food worth M26 million to Lesotho.
The food includes 1053 tonnes of white rice, parboiled rice and wheat.
Speaking at the handover ceremony yesterday, the Minister in the Prime Minister’s office, Limpho Tau, expressed gratitude to the government of China.
Tau said the gift symbolises love.
He also noted that due to climate change, many households in Lesotho were facing hunger and in need of assistance.
He urged those who will be responsible for distributing the food to do so fairly and start with the most vulnerable.
“This good gesture comes as a result of the excellent bilateral relationship between our two countries,” Tau said.
The Ambassador of China to Lesotho, Lei Kezhong, said he was happy that his country was donating food to Lesotho.
This comes after Prime Minister Samuel Matekane met with the country’s development partners about five months ago.
Kezhong added that he hoped the assistance would boost Lesotho’s efforts to fight food insecurity.
