This week is probably the busiest week of the festive season as many close shops for 2022, receive December salaries and start shopping for Christmas. There are also countless events happening, tempting people to attend and spend money. Granted the festive season is a time to relax and rest, however, it is also the time when many people get robbed or scammed. This week’s article shares a few tips to transact safely and avoid being robbed during the festive season.
- Digital fraud
As we comfortably transact using digital platforms, I cannot emphasise the importance of being vigilant enough. When using digital platforms, consumers should be aware of the following types of digital fraud:
- Phishing, smishing or vishing: This happens when fraudsters attempt to access yourpersonal information by sending you a link via email, SMS or call redirecting you to a fake website. Remember your bank will NEVERask you to disclose your personal information through any of those. Do not click on links or confirm personal information to strangers.
- Remote access: This happens when fraudsters call and ask to assist you to download software. By so doing, they take control of your computer over the internet and access your banking profile. The bank will NEVER call and ask you for your one-time pin (OTP) or install any software remotely.
- Identity theft: This happens when your documents i.e., passports, national IDs, driver’s licenses etc. are stolen or a false ID is created with your personal information. Do not leave your personal documents lying around, post on social media platforms or confirm personal information on strange calls.
Lost device: Should you lose your cell phone, call your bank immediately and delink your banking applications.
- Getting help from random strangers at shopping complexes or malls
As you visit different shops to buy your festive groceries, clothing, furniture, or electronics, you may be tempted to ‘score a bargain’ where people will offer you items at a cheaper price.
- Ask for name tags and verify: Fraudsters take advantage of consumers during the festive season, pretending to be employees of various stores. Do not accept help from people you do not know. Always ask for a name tag, pay for items in the store and ask for a receipt.
- Avoid ‘back door deals’: If someone offers you an item at a cheaper price and asks you to meet them outside the premises – remember if it is too good to be true, it probably is!
- Always be vigilant and never leave your valuables lying around
- Do not leave your valuables lying around in cars or public places.
- Many shops and event venues will be crowded and criminals take advantage by pocket-picking. Therefore, maintain distance when in crowded places and keep your valuables close to you.
- Always let loved ones know about your whereabouts, ensure your phone is always charged, use reliable and trusted cab services late at night.
The festive season is a great opportunity for us to rest, re-energise and connect with loved ones. It is, however, important that we always be vigilant and safe. When in doubt, call your financial services provider and verify regardless of how small it may seem. Likhomo!
