Development partners today urged Lesotho to have a peaceful consensus on the 11th Amendment to the Constitution Bill, also known as the Omnibus Bill, workshop, and justification for the benefit of Basotho who put their trust in the reforms process.

This was said by Political Officer at the European Union Lesotho, David Healy who said Basotho were hopeful that the Omnibus Bill would be passed by the two houses of parliament until at the last moment when the process fell off and fuelled fear among Basotho.

He however said he still has faith that the Omnibus Bill will still be adopted.

“From the very begging this has been a Basotho led process and it has been clear that Basotho want a revised Constitution that will address violations of the rule of law, abuses of power that have occurred in the past,” Healy said.

Likewise, United Nations resident coordinator, Amanda Mukwashi encouraged parliamentarians to consider this initiative as an autonomous intervention that looks beyond the present predicaments that focus on the future of the Lesotho we want.

“As you discuss the recalling on parliament, please bear in mind the issues that this Bill is dealing with, please remember that this nation faces a difficult time with multiple challenges that need to be addressed.

“The country is preparing for elections; budget challenges persist, increasing social inequalities including a very worrying focus by the Lesotho Vulnerability Assessment Report on food security for over 500 000 Basotho that is projected in the next few months,” she mentioned
