The ministry of water, along with representatives of UNICEF and United Kingdom (UK) Aid, on Monday handed over 79 water systems to communities in Mafeteng, Mohale’s Hoek and Quthing.

Speaking on behalf of the Ha Lenonyane villagers in Mafeteng, Ralesole Moqolo said they are grateful for the water system.

“We have been struggling to access safe water for a very long time. We would drink unhygienic water from uncovered wells, which was not good for our health. Now, I am really excited that our people can drink safe water.”

Moqolo promised that the villagers would use the water carefully for their daily basis.

On behalf of the women of the village, ‘Mamotheba Moqolo said the borehole has brought hope for a positive change to their lives.

“I am really thankful for the support we received from our benefactors. We used to fetch water the neighbouring villages of Likhetla and Sekameng on donkey back because of the long distance. Sometimes the villagers there would send us away, saying there wasn’t enough water for them and us.”

Asked by the UNICEF and UKAID representatives how the water system saves their time, she explained that easy accessibility of water enables her to focus on other household chores while ensuring she can now spend more quality time with her family.

The deputy minister of water affairs Maimane Maphathe, said the government is committed to extending water supply to other villages which still experience water shortage.
