The South African Civil Aviation Authority (SACAA) in partnership with Lesotho’s Department of Civil Aviation held an aviation career guidance session at Trinity High school this week.

The purpose of the exercise was to share information with students and give them valuable exposure to various careers in aviation.

Aviation is still viewed as a far-fetched career by black students hence the authority is moving around various schools in order to remove the stigma.

The students also meet with aviation professionals.

Speaking at the event, pilot and Sacca trainee flight operations inspector, Ditebogo Koenaite said she was one just a girl from a small village in Polokwane who had a dream of becoming a pilot.

“I performed well in matric hence I was able to acquire a bursary at SACCA to study to become a pilot. I started flying at 18 years.”

She started with a student pilot licence, and later she pursued a private licence followed by a commercial pilot licence which landed her a job.

SACAA was established as a stand-alone authority charged with promoting, regulating and enforcing aviation safety and security in South Africa.
