Chief Mitchell Seeiso Maama (54) was sworn in as member of the Senate in February 2021 after the family nominated him to succeed the late Chieftainess Mabela Seeiso Maama, who died in January the same year.
Chieftainess Mabela Seeiso Maama was the wife of Morena Mohale Seeiso Maama, and the couple were blessed with a daughter – Thithiboea Seeiso Maama.
A statement from the ministry of local government and chieftainship says the inauguration of the principal chief will be marked with among others, performances by local musicians mostly those from Roma, horse riders, praise poets and music by schools in the area.
“The event, which is facilitated by the ministry of local government as custodian of chieftainship affairs in Lesotho, is an initiative of both the family of the principal chief and the residents, to provide an opportunity for the public to welcome and celebrate the new principal chief.
“The main roles of chiefs include serving as a symbol of Basotho’s identity and unity, custodians of Basotho culture and security, as well as an embodiment of His Majesty’s authority while advancing the principles of grass-root democracy, local justice, human rights and accountability,” the statement read.
