Protecting learners, loosening restrictions at school

Learning and teaching at schoosl globally has been adversely affected by the emergence of the pandemic Covid-19. The condition killed millions of people across the globe, with teachers and learners alike being infected with the scourge.

Lesotho was not spared in this regard as reports of some teachers filtered in of pedagogues succumbing to the deadly virus. But with recent developments that include following the health protocols as set out by the World Health Organisation, all seems to be on a decline with regard to the rate of infections and the dawn of omicron.

Now, the government has taken a bold step to open up and loosen restrictions, thereby putting an end to rotational learning in all institutions of studying.

The ministry of education and training announced this week that all learners will now be allowed to attend classes as normal. This might advance the capacity and opportunity for learners to catch up with the syllabus. But it must be borne in mind that there is still no cure for Covid-19.

We therefore urge all concerned to ensure the health and safety of all stakeholders, a move that would help in further reduction of the spread of the disease.

The prevention methods such as washing of hands, should continue to be practiced. But we fear others such as social distancing will not be feasible, specifically in classrooms.

Schools must tread carefully when resuming classes with normal attendance.
