Lesotho Red Cross Society says the current the prevailing heavy rains have affected communities, families and health centres, and might lead to waterborne diseases.

This was mentioned in a statement issued by the Society on Monday this week. The statement says protected springs have been destroyed by the heavy rains while other unprotected springs are also destroyed and seriously contaminated.

“This is likely to result in an outbreak of waterborne disease. The situation will further be exacerbated by the practice of open defecation. Cases of people drowning in water especially rivers and local dams are reported in various locations.

“Most villages have no toilets and protected water systems, hence the possibility of outbreaks of water-borne diseases.

“A rapid assessment will be launched to establish the magnitude of destruction throughout the country,” the statement read.
