Limkonkwing University of Creative Technology Lesotho (LUCT) will award 40 students scholarships of different levels as their way of commemorating the life of the school’s late founder and president Emeritus Tan Sri who died in June this year.
According to the university, it will commemorate the life of Tan Sri every year with acts of giving back to the community to honour his legacy and foundation called ‘Healing the World Foundation’.
LUCT’s campus director administration, Tefo Macheli, explained that the scholarships will be in three categories which are Limkokwing Frontline and Healthcare Scholarships meant for Covid-19 frontline healthcare workers’ children, Limkokwing Scholarships for underprivileged and orphaned children and scholarships awarded in remembrance of founding president as a philanthropist under The Heal the World Foundation.
He indicated that selected students will be fully sponsored for the tenure of their academic duration. They will be selected in collaboration with the ministry of social development.
“This is planned to be an annual event commemorated at around the time of Tan Sri’s birthday. As we all know he was a great believer of philanthropy and he lived his life to reflect this ideology. It is therefore through this initiative that we as LUCT we go forward to curate under ‘The Heal the World Foundation’ as an extension of Tan Sri’s immaculate practice to live beyond his life.
“We wish to see more Basotho youth expand the horizons of their academic journey to boost the human capital of Lesotho and thus awarding these scholarships to the less privileged during these difficult times of the Covid-19 pandemic,” he said.
A former LUCT student who is also a previous beneficiary of an LUCT scholarship, Halieo Motanyane, said in 2009, LUCT visited the orphanage she resided at Reitumetse Church Project when she first heard about the university and little did she know years later she would be awarded a scholarship.
She explained that she received a full scholarship from LUCT that helped her with her tuition fees and also her rental payment.
She expressed her gratitude to LUCT and that she is now a two time published author and a proud LUCT graduate.
“I am happy for anyone who is to receive the scholarships and I would like them to know that their lives are going to change forever. May this school continue to help many other young people like for many generations to come,” Motanyane said.
The acting minister of social development, Keketso Sello, thanked LUCT for the act of kindness to vulnerable children.
He said the number of vulnerable children keep increasing every day and made it impossible for the government of Lesotho to reach each and everyone.
“It is very important to invest in education because it gives our youth an opportunity to reach their full potential in life,” Sello said.
