The Lesotho Mounted Police Service (LMPS) today launched a digital community-based crime prevention system in the capital Maseru.
The M558 000 technology equipment was handed over to the LMPS by the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP).
Speaking at the occasion, Senior Assistant Police Commissioner Ezekiel Senti said the project was first introduced in 2020 at Tṧakholo in Mafeteng, as a pilot project.
Senti said community policing forums were trained on how to use mobile phones to report criminal acts in their respective neighbourhoods.
“The project is ongoing and the rollout will happen throughout the country, and hotspots have been identified which experience the most crimes in the country. This will ensure prompt reporting of crime and swift police response.
“Law enforcement agencies should not be caught napping, but should be on top of their game. Cyber crime and other emerging national crimes such as human trafficking require us to capacitate our enforcement agencies so that they can deal with these challenges,” Senti said.
The equipment consists of two servers, switch, laptops, rooters, fan, panels and panels.
