A protest began on Twitter on Sunday, which demands that Prime Minister, Moeketsi Majoro address the nation and disclose all details pertaining to the government’s vaccine rollout strategy.

The initiator of the online petition, Kananelo Boloetsi insists that having access to a COVID-19 vaccine is the right of every citizen.

Boloetsi says section 27 of the Constitution states that ‘Lesotho shall adopt policies aimed at ensuring the highest attainable standard of physical and mental health for its citizens, including policies designed to provide for the prevention, treatment and control of epidemic, endemic, occupational and other diseases’.

He noted that to date, the government has vaccinated not more than 40,000 people. “So government’s apparent failure to provide vaccines timeously is a violation of government’s obligation in terms of Section 27 (1)(c) of the constitution.

“The prime minister must also explain why, in his view, government’s failure to vaccinate the people is not an infringement on constitution provisions.

“The response to the call to protest online is very good; people are tagging the Prime Minister on their tweets and asking him to say when they will get their vaccine,” Boloetse said.
