Lesotho truck drivers were stuck at the Maseru border gate today, unable to cross into neighbouring South Africa because South African Revenue Authority (SARS) demanded that they be in possession of mover’s bonds.

A mover’s bond is a document that shows that the goods carried by the truck are insured or protected.

One of the truck drivers who was destined for eSwatini, Mzilikazi Motṧetṧe, told theReporter that when they got to the border, they were required to produce a mover’s bond.

He said although he just got there this morning, there are others who had been waiting since last night.

“This is the first time that SARS wants the document from us, and we are appalled. The mover’s bond is issued by an agent in South Africa; we know it is something that we need to have. If we are here right now at this time, it means the order we are delivering it is already delayed,” he said.

Another truck driver Sipho Sibasa said he was supposed to have crossed the border last night but has been held up at the port of exit. He said the mover’s bond takes up to six months to be issued, which means they will be forced to wait until then if SARS doesn’t reconsider its position.
