Churches blast MPs

The Christain Council of Lesotho (CCL) has condemned Members of Parliament (MPs) for their decision to allocate themselves M5 000 monthly petrol allowances.

In a statement issued on Saturday, CCL expressed shock at the proceedings of March 22 in parliament where, among other things, MPs gave themselves taxpayers’ money under false pretences of being petrol money for official travels.

“What is surprising is why the MPs cannot use their salaries to fulfill work related travels as M5 000 is a lot.

“When defending their deceitful act, the MPs claim their salaries are not the same as those of Southern African counties’ MPs. The biggest question is, what has ever been done in this country that is similar to other countries. Service delivery in this country is shameful but they never compare it against other countries. Unemployment continues to be a big problem in this country; that is what they should be focusing on.

“We would like to appeal to the MPs and remind them that they were elected by the same taxpayers that they are now trying to rob. We really hope they will develop a conscience and stop looting more money from Basotho,” the statement read.
