The minister of agriculture and food security Tefo Mapesela says the seed subsidy for winter farming which includes inputs like peas, wheat and fertilisers will start on April 6.
Mapesela encouraged farmers to prepare to plant wheat and peas as winter is almost here. Mapesela revelaed that there will be a 60 percent subsidy on prices of peas seeds and fertilizers. He further explained that farmers are allowed to buy items enough for their fields and not more.
“We have realised that because of Covid-19 and an unstable economy, many farmers will not be able to plant this year, therefore cabinet has decided that to meet halfway farmers who are interested in planting wheat. This subsidy will be for farmers who have formed a cooperation,” he said.
He also encouraged Basotho to take advantage of use winter farming to plant more crops that ill alleviate the poverty caused by Covid-19.
