Love show inspires club banger

By Neo Kolane

One episode of a local reality love show, Take Me To My Crush (TMTMC) is all it took to inspire the song titled ‘We Belong Together Sfapano’, word that were used by a crusher on his date.

Aired online, TMTMC is a platform that gives individuals aged 18 and above a chance to write in about a person they have a romantic crush on.

Speaking to theReporter, the singer, Maleboka Makhemeng admitted that the song indeed drew its inspiration from that particular TMTMC episode.

“In the song, I use words like ‘ho chesa ka sfubeng’’ and ‘we belong together sfapano’, but it is a great song.

“I grew up singing in church, like almost everyone else. Then I was approached by one of the well-known local artists and we did a song together. Unfortunately, we lost contact and no follow ups were made. But this is my very first song.”

Kali Mokoena, the mastermind behind the song, was approached by the host of TMTMC, Tśepang Mabooe, who asked him to churn out love songs for the show.

“However, Maleboka appeared on TMTMC season 1 episode4, where she shoots about a handsome guy she believed was a potential soulmate. She tells him how she feels about him on their first date, but the poor gentlemen was shy and kept to himself, whereas Maleboka on the other hand kept saying ‘we belong together sfapano’. That phrase caught the imagination of many viewers and it came as no surprise that it ended up trending.

“In the midst of everything, I noticed that Maleboka could actually sing. She had videos of herself singing other people’s songs,” Kali revealed.

The rapper, who is also featured on the song, recalls that working on the song was a bit of a challenge initially.

“We were in the studio for almost six to seven hours, trying to find an instrument that could match Maleboka’s personality until the song eventually came together.

The song was dropped two weeks ago.

Kali enthuses that people are actually really loving the song, especially because it came as a surprise, a lovely one, to see that Maleboka could sing.

“They knew her from that TMTMC episode and that was all. The song is for people who believe in love and love each other, those who celebrate love and whose feelings are mutual. It teaches people that, when you one desire something, it’s not a bad thing to go after it.”
