The minister of social development ‘Matebatso Doti says due to challenges like lack of food production caused by Covid-19 which rendered many Basotho vulnerable, the government of Lesotho asked for help from the European Union (EU).

Doti said the EU, in partnership with Unicief, responded to the government’s request by helping 5000 families with vulnerable children who are under the ministry of social development’s child grant programme.

“Each family will receive M1 500 per month for three months. This donation will go together with the usual amount that the families receive from the ministry. This donation by the two organisations will also be extended to 6 000 other families who are no on the child grant programme.

“The government of Lesotho also helped 12 741 families on public assistance with cash through the ministry of social development. Each family will receive M870 for three months.

“The main aim of this money is to help in the needs of children, such as identification documents and food, especially during this time of the Covid-19 pandemic,” the minister said.
