Funerals are still a major threat to the people, as high chances of Covid-19 infections occur at these gatherings due to cultural practices that Basotho still apply during the services.

According to NACOSEC, not more than 50 people will be allowed to attend a funeral service under the current Orange level restrictions that the country entered on Wednesday.

A funeral service should be held outdoors in order to curb the possible spread of the pandemic, and only 10 men will be allowed at the graveyard to help with the burial. All attendees are expected to wear masks.

The deceased is also expected to be buried within seven days and the funeral service should not take more than two hours or be completed later than 10:00am. Only five people/family members are allowed to collect and identify the corpse from the mortuary and no viewing of the corpse will be allowed at home.

There will be no night vigil or Friday evening prayer service, and no slaughtering of an animal; serving of meals at the funeral is not allowed as well.
