Twenty-nine-year old Morahanye Lefatsa of Khubelu in the Mokhotlong district appeared before the Mokhotlong magistrate’s court on January 21 on charges of murder, attempted murder, destruction of property and possession of an illegal firearm.

According to Senior Superintendent Mpiti Mopeli, an undisclosed number of intruders invaded the village at Khubelu Ha Motlalepula on the night of January 03, shooting indiscriminately and burning houses, resulting in the death of eight people. One of the raiders also died in the shooting spree, bringing the death toll to nine.

Mopeli indicated that other suspected invaders are still on the run and police have launched a man hunt for them.

“We appeal to any Mosotho who might have information on the suspects to inform the police as soon as possible.”

The police spokesperson said the suspect remains in police custody and will appear before the Mokhotlong magistrate’s court again on February 4.
