LRA explains rent relief

By Kefiloe Kajane

In April 2020, at the height of the national Covid-19 lockdown, the government of Lesotho made several pronouncements regarding relief measures which included the rent relief initiative to assist struggling businesses, and LRA was tasked with the responsibility to administer it on behalf of the government.

Acting LRA commissioner ‘Mathabo Mokoko said the rent support will cover a period of one month for commercial property tenants with lease agreements between themselves and commercial building owners or managers whose business were not operational during the national lock.

She emphasized that LRA is only administrating the scheme on behalf of the government and the guidelines for rent relief are introduced by the government not LRA.

Tax compliant businesses will be eligible as well as those that are up to date with their rental payment and are registered with the ministry of trade and industry.

Businesses should get registration forms online at www.lra.org.ls
